Interview with the CEO

Mobile Money Summit, Singapore
July, 2011

Following is an interview with Craig Halliday: Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director. The interview was conducted by the GSMA as part of the Mobile Money Summit in Singapore, July 2011.

What’s your view on the current state of the mobile money market?

Mobile Money may still be in its early days, but it’s come a long way in a few short years with over 100 deployments now live. It is widely accepted that this technology has the potential to impact and enhance lives the world over. This has already proved the case
in a few countries, and opinions are varied regarding why it has been successful in one country and not in another. As often happens with new technology, people tend to make grand predictions, which is perfectly understandable when you’re talking about
a potentially revolutionary concept. But at this point in the journey, I think we have now reached a more interesting point than ever before. We are just starting to witness some real traction with mobile money, especially for unbanked populations, and we
are gathering precious knowledge from the experience of early adopters. I see the current and the next round of mobile money deployments as great opportunities to apply this learning and move upwards on the maturity curve.
