In their 2019 Annual Letter, Bill and Melinda Gates speak about the transformative potential of mobile phones for women in developing countries.
For marginalised women, owning a mobile phone goes beyond accessing life altering services and opportunities, although this is a clear benefit. Mobile phones allow women to challenge social norms and work towards bridging the gender gap.
In some countries across Africa, Asia and South America, women remain up to 40 percent less likely than men to have used the internet. Access to mobile technology gives women the tools to confront and overcome these inequities. Progress is being made across the board as providers and non-profits look for ways to target women.
